What started as a Parish Nursing program in Altamont soon became Community Caregivers, Inc. Founded in 1994 as a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the 20 year mission of Community Caregivers is to enable individuals of all ages to maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life within their homes and communities. Community Caregivers provides non-medical, caregiving services to those in need at no cost to the recipients. Community Caregivers offer these services to residents in the Towns of Guilderland, Bethlehem, New Scotland, Berne and Knox and in the City of Albany through a robust volunteer network of dedicated individuals with a desire to assist their neighbors.
Since 2010, more than 230 Community Caregivers’ volunteers have provided approximately 16,500 services to nearly 500 individuals. Services include visitations, transportation, respite for caregivers, shopping assistance, prescription pickup, telephone assurance calls, help with paperwork and chores, and even assisting with meal preparation as needed.
The organization is guided by a Board of Directors consisting of community members, business leaders, and professionals from healthcare and other fields; the office is staffed with a small crew of dedicated employees. Services are provided at no charge regardless of age, race, religion, sexual orientation or national origin. The organization is funded by charitable contributions, fund raising and grants.
